Just call me PAT’S BACK!!! I had been in the Army for nine years. On July 7, 2007 I got shot in my head. It changed my life. I survived!! Now I can’t be so serious.
I grew up in West Springfield, Virginia. I was the youngest of six kids. Growing up I lived at Carrleigh Parkway. I went to West Springfield HS and finished in 1991. Then I went to NOVA for a year and a half. In January, 1993 a went to Elon University in North Carolina for the semester. I went Radford University and finished in 1997. A month later I signed to joined the Army.
In October 28, 1997 I went to Fort Benning. I wanted to be an Infantry soldier. My first duty station was Fort Lewis, Washington. They sent me to work at 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment which at the time was part of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division (Light). I was a “Bobcat!” I started my Army career as an E-4. In November 1998 we went to Panama for a month. Then we went to NTC in May 1999. In January 2000 we went to Sinai, Egypt for six months. While I was there, I earned the Expert Infantry Badge (EIB). I worked there for another year and a half. In December 2001, I became a E-6.
In January 2002, I moved to Schofield Barracks in O’ahu, Hawaii. I worked for 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. I was a “Wolfhound!” I went to Thailand in May for Cobra Gold. In February 2003, we went to NTC for 45 weeks.
Then on October 28, 2003 I went to Fort Benning, GA. I graduated 3d Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment (Officer Candidate School). I finished at the top of my class and became a Lieutenant. After OCS I did 2nd Battalion, 58th Infantry. Next was Ranger School and I finished. When I completed I need a break. I went to Infantry Mortar Leader Course. I was there for a year and I was finally done.
In January 2005 I went back to Fort Lewis. This time I worked at 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. In February 2005 we went to NTC. In June we went to Mosul, Iraq. After 5 months B/2-3 IN we moved to (Taji)? We stand there a month then we went to Baghdad. Every day, week or month we went to different places.
In May I got a new job. I worked with mortars and REC. Then on July 7, 2007 at night we were on the roof of a house looking for IEDs. After a couple of hours me and two soldiers were going to the Stryker to get water. The first two went down and I was the last one. I didn’t make it. I got shot in the head. My soldiers saved my life…
